"I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
John 8:12
In the Catholic church, light has always had a special significance because it represents Christ. We know that Jesus called himself the Light of the world. Additionally, St. John’s Gospel connects Christ with the imagery of light in John 1:4: "In him was life; and the life was the light of men."
Lighting a candle for someone living or deceased is a way to both extend your prayers and show solidarity with the person the prayer is being made on behalf of. We also believe in the importance of our prayers for those who have died, asking the Lord to forgive any sins they may have committed due to human frailty, but it is also a great way to keep their memory alive as we honor who they were and the good they did. The faithful also light candles as a sign of gratitude to God for answered prayers.
Here, at Our Lady of the Lakes, we want to offer you this opportunity to pray for all your intentions with the Prayer Candles placed in our lobby.
